Bluffing Your Way to the Pot

The possibility of winning in a poker game without showing your hand is called bluffing. Bluffing is a crucial element of poker. No other card game allows you to bluff your way into winning the big pot.

The popular poker game today is the "community card poker" or some may call it "Texas hold 'em" or even "Ohama hold 'em". Community cards are dealt face up and are shared by all of the players while having the dealer give them individually dealt cards too. The players will try and make the best hand from sharing the community cards with all the other players. In this game, bluffing is the quintessential parts that can make you win the game.

It is not only by mathematics, statistics or probability that can you bag the pot but also through the art of psychological combat. These psychological combats in poker can be divided into two ways: bluffing, and semi-bluffing.

In order to use bluffing more effectively, it must be done on a high stakes game. Bluffing becomes more powerful at a higher limit. A very good situation for bluffing is when your about to bet on a flop that shows a high card like an ace. This can make your opponent think that you got a pair of aces. Bluffing can also make your opponents to think that in a flush draw, you represent a flush. It is also the best time to bluff when you're representing a hand when there are only one or two players opposing you. Lastly, bluffing is more beneficial when put to use in a no-limit game. The player's entire stacks of chip are on the line making them think twice on whether or not they can play against your hand. In a limit game, however, the player has an idea on how much they are going to lose.

Semi-bluffing is a way to make your opponents think that you're bluffing on a hand that might develop on the next flop or river. A great example to this is when you have a pair of eights which can be improved by drawing another eight in the community cards. It means that one more card can make you get a three of a kind, which then increases your chances of winning in that round. Bluffing that you already have a high hand can force your opponent to fold immediately letting you win that round.
